Digital Research, Design and Development Efforts
This collection reflects a handful of my digital research, design and development projects. There are dozens more, encompassing efforts in a variety of sectors such as Food & Beverage, Financial, Automotive, Tech/Data, and Hospitality.
Improving Employee Experience Through a Knowledge Management Product
The organization had an existing intranet that was not well-maintained. Using the product methodology I had developed, I led the effort to redesign and relaunch the corporate intranet with the intention to transfer to an internal business owner when it reached 1-x status as part of our enterprise application suite. My efforts included successful completion of a significant quantity of user research, developing and selling the vision, roadmap, and strategy internally, securing budget and headcount for support, supervising design and development activities, setting and executing content strategy, change management, governance, and training. I was tasked with keeping the budget as low as possible.
This effort required close collaboration with internal and outsourced technology teams, implementation and expansion of the existing enterprise taxonomy, planning and implementation of appropriate security requirements, security hardening, and testing.
This product began reducing effort by content owners, improving findability, and reducing duplicate content creation effort immediately. The business case projected that this product had the potential to save at least 15,000 hours per year; at a nominal rate of $40/hr representing an average employee fully loaded cost, this tool was on track to return at least $600,000 per year to the organization's bottom line.
Mobile Phone UI
Designed, usability tested and refined mobile phone UI for major manufacturer. Was responsible for successful menu flow and interaction design.
Early digital & physical prototype of a handheld smart device
I created the UI for and performed usability and market analysis for a digital and physical prototype of an early smart handheld device created by a large telecom company. Ultimately, the product was discontinued based on unfavorable market analysis results.
Design improvements and functionality enhancements for large retail customer special order system
Completed field research, designs, prototyping, prototype usability testing and requirements for front-end special order management system for large DIY retailer.
Retail how-to web content analysis, strategy, and recommendations
Completed inventory and audit of existing how-to content for a large retailer. Performed market scan and evaluated user feedback for areas of greatest opportunity. Developed how-to content strategy and roadmap inclusive of partnership opportunities and internal authorship vs third-party involvement.
Service and digital platform design for customer-facing installation process
Completed analysis of existing processes for installation management of large home-related purchases. Conducted user research to understand key user requirements for the process; developed a prototype, requirements and recommended process changes for internal and third-party installers that were all successfully put into production.
Identifying and Creating an Innovative Jobseeker Experience
I conducted user research to identify jobseeker needs, then worked with the business to develop the business case. Following that, I created a high fidelity prototype that was shared with business leaders in order to solidify the business case and achieve funding for development.
Research, Design, Development, and Launch of Store-based Repair Tracking System for major retailer
A major DIY retailer realized that their process for receiving, managing and closing out the repair process for customer tools was poorly organized and poorly designed. My role was that of user experience researcher and designer, working alongside technical team members.
My team and I conducted research with store associates to understand the repair process flow. We then redesigned the process to simplify it from over a dozen separate steps across multiple systems to 5 steps in a single system.
Prior to beginning to code the new system, I tested prototypes with associates to ensure all needs were met. I also included associates in extended UAT testing to ensure that the system worked as planned once actual system data was presented.
This client requested a plan that involved little to no training and so the team and I focused on single-trial learning, that is, after just a few minutes of experimentation, the user could understand what to do. We used that approach to design the UI elements and this approach was successfully validated during UAT. The client was successfully able to roll out the system to users in nearly 2,000 stores with no training beyond an introductory message needed. There was no subsequent increase in support contacts, either.
Fully functional prototype: Friend Locator
Developed a fully functional prototype from research through development for a mobile device friend locator app for large telecommunications client. Responsible for user research, information and interaction design, requirements gathering and management. Assisted in preparation of business case.
